How to make a decision right now
-
Most important: does the bottle say “100% Agave”? If not, it is a lower-quality style called mixto. This is where most bad tequila flavor comes from.

-
What style should I buy?
- Blanco: perfect for margaritas and palomas
- Añejo is barrel aged for years and great for bourbon lovers
- Reposado a great gateway, smoother than blanco with just a hint of oak
-
Is aged tequila better? Barrel aging is great, but it does not make alcohol better. It merely alters it’s flavor by spending time in wood barrels.
Want to make a killer margarita?
- Must haves: fresh lime juice and agave nectar or simple syrup
- Optional: salt & triple sec (Skip the cheap stuff. Bad orange liqueur does more harm than good.)

Now that you've got what you need, here's what makes tequila fascinating
What is it?
- Alcohol made from a hearty desert plant that takes years to mature, the agave (uh-gah-vay).
- More than 200 agave varietals exist. Tequila relies on one, the blue weber.
- Similar to how champagne can only be produced in France, the same goes for tequila in Mexico.
- Most is from two parts of the state of Jalisco (hah-LEES-koh), the highlands and valley.
